Subject: Clavis Sinica free trial feedback

Hi there,

Your program is incredibly convenient and user friendly! I can read through relatively difficult texts smoothly without having to start and stop at every word or term I don't know. This really helps me acquire the vocabulary I need, and it helps me remember new words easier with context.

One thing I think would help a lot is if I can keep unknown or new terms highlighted in the program. That way, I can see without having to click on anything that I've already looked up a term before. Just a personal preference.

I haven't played around with the flashcard/testing mode, but it would be great if I can export vocab and the sentences that new terms occur to Anki, a really awesome flashcard app.

Thank you for the wonderful program! I'll be making the purchase soon!

Dear Dr. Porter,

Thank you so much for developing such high quality, well designed and functional products. I have been using your software and apps for several years and it has greatly benefited my study of Chinese. I'm mostly using Chinese Zika and Xiezi and recently loaded your Poetry app and I really enjoy it. I especially appreciate the calligraphy tab on the Poetry app.

I practice Chinese medicine and was wondering if you ever considered developing apps specifically designed for teaching Chinese medical practitioners Chinese?

Best Wishes,

Thank you. The program downloaded easily and installed quickly. I have spent the afternoon and evening exploring the program, and send you the following comments.

First, my background. 30 years ago, I was sent to the Defense Language Institute to study Chinese to become a Voice Intercept Operator for the US Army. The training program was primarily focused on aural comprehension, but there was some training on speaking, and minimal training on reading, and none on writing. Nevertheless, I find that, as I have begun to relearn Chinese, much of my aural and speaking skills have returned rapidly. I have a way to go with the characters.

I had previously used an earlier version of Clavis Sinica, and found this version a marked improvement. The old version ran dreadfully slowly, and this one speeds right along. I love the ability to cut and paste from and to the program, and its helpfulness is great. I appreciate the program's ability to recognize not only characters in inputted text, but compounds as well, and the tab feature moving from compound to compound helps me get avery quick sense of what I am reading.

The notes on the characters, the information on radicals, stroke numbers and stroke order is very helpful, in addition to, as I indicated before, the helpful information on compounds.

One thing that puzzles me is the program's entry default of inserting each new character to the left of the first character. Most modern written Chinese seems to move from left to right, and the default seems to complicate things needlessly. However, it is easy to override the default, and to enter from left to right, so this is not a huge concern.

Overall, this is an excellent program, and an extreme value for the price.

Thanks for listening,

Bob

From: Colin McLarty

Yes CS is a brilliant learning tool. It lets me immerse myself in long beautiful readings I could never have approached without the Text Reader. I find myself recognizing many characters I do not specifically recall learning. Fluent readers do that a lot. But at my beginning level I had rarely done it before.

The CS method and technology deserves to be at least as big as the Perseus Project has been in ancient languages. The world today needs better bridges between Chinese and western languages, and CS is a great step in that. But I think it could do even more with a bit larger font and dictionary. I absolutely appreciate that this would be a lot of work.

It would help me a lot if the Text Reader would put double question marks?? in the place of any character not in its font. But I like freezing much better than just dropping the character. Freezing lets me know there is a problem, and find it.

On the scale of history, Chinese-western contact is still in early days! CS is doing a great deal to help.

best, Colin

Hello Mr Porter,
I think this is a very innovative tool to learn Chinese via poem or poetry. The scramble feature to re-construct the poem is very good to test one understanding on the characters. There are a lot of Tang poems but let's select those that easier to understand and able to relate too. I am definitely looking forward to more poems.

Hi.

I did download this app the other day and I did find it very useful, Thank you very much this is useful on my commute back and to work. I find the grouping of flashcard very good to use, but it would improve the app even more if you would add an option to build a number of user defined flashcard lists also, maybe up to 20 lists would work.

The reason I see of doing that is that I also study Chinese using a number of text books with individual vocabularies for each chapter if I could myself add these characters to user lists an exercise those lists chapter by chapter would be a great enhancement to my learning curve. Characters could be added using a standard chinese keyboard on android and I assume most of this characters already exists in the apps lists so they could be brought out of those lists with pinyin and meaning or the tool could give the user an ability to enter pinyin an meaning separately.

I think this would improve an already good app into an even better app :)

Thanks again for a helpful Chinese learning experience.

David,

Your program is wonderful.

It has already shown to be a great help in learning to translate Chinese. I have a knowledge of perhaps 500-600 characters, and can get the general gist of a few hundred more. I've been working on adding to my stock of recognizable characters and drilling each new character. Your program is great for this purpose.

But when I try to translate a short text as a way of enhancing and extending my Chinese, I am continually spending much time researching characters in the dictionary. And especially 2-character words. Your program is perfect for this. When I paste a piece of text into the window, I can use the character identification at the bottom of the screen to quickly identify any unknown characters. And when it identifies the correct 2-word character based on the next character, it saves me an incredible amount of dictionary work.

So through character drills and passage translation, the program is speeding up my learning of Chinese.

You have created an extremely useful program. Thank you.

I have used the Reading and reference software, and it is the most effective and user friendly product for learning Mandarin, that I have encountered. I like that the reading material can be accessed by even beginners, who can easily build their vocabulary, character recognition, fluency in reading.

I liked the idea of being able to look up radicals, and I found it especially useful that you could learn both the meaning and the sound of characters and radicals as you study the reading.

Please keep producing and upgrading these products. They will make the difference in whether many people study the Chinese language or not.

It was my pleasure. And thank you so much for the download. I really am having a lot of fun "analyzing texts and annotating characters". I don't know why language students aren't using these kinds of computer programs to tackle vocabulary in all languages. Maybe there could be a 'clavis germanica' etc, or something of that sort as well? Also I think your "Chinese Voices" material is just the thing for intermediate learners. I can only hope that there will be a sequel someday.

I'm also planning on mentioning your products in a youtube video, just to help other Chinese learners find the 'key' as well.

Dear Dr. Porter,

Thanks for providing a great program. I've been using the 3.1 version of Clavis Sinica very successfully for years. I just use it to help me read technical documents that have characters that I don't yet know. It is a great help. Really helps me avoid getting distracted and bogged down with a regular dictionary search. I realize, of course, that this was not the intended purpose for the program. But even so it is very useful for that purpose.

Also, I noticed on your university page a partial reference for an article you wrote:

"Democracy or Bust: Why our Knowledge about What the Chinese Lack is Really No Knowledge at All" (in China in 2008: A Year of Great Significance, 2009)

I would be very interested in reading that article. If you could provide me the full reference, I would be very grateful. My hope would be to request it through interlibrary loan, and the librarians will want page numbers, etc.

Thanks.

Hello David,

Last night, responding to WinVistas alerts on Control Panel/Progs&Features page to reinstall trial version v5 in order to fully uninstall (again) the sticky remnant files from Clavis (v4) folder, which it didn't, I manually deleted them, then I installed new v5 downloaded from your link. Which I allowed to install where it wanted to go, [Clavis Sinica v5] folder.

Then I saved a Text Reader Window. It seemed to save the page and it could be reopened. However, this morning after rebooting pc, it had disappeared from the 'file/Open' list. And it couldn't be found anywhere. I repeated the exercise with the same result. Then I opened CS 'As Administrator' (which is mentioned in your instructions somewhere) which has definitely remedied the problem, even after rebooting. So, job done!

On reflection, that action (open as Admin') may have been all that needed to be done after upgrading v4 to v5, but shall quit while winning and leave that conundrum to experience.

Many thanks for your help. I really appreciate the personal service that I receive from you. In fact, it would be the most important factor I would mention in recommending your program.

By way of responding to your kindness, I could put a referral link to your website on my website(s) home page where I have some linked pages with Chinese texts; see: www.zvac.com and/or www.zvac.co.uk

I wanted to understand your intentions for new apps. It seems that you are rapidly adding more HSK vocabulary, with expanded apps coming out every month. Should I wait for the HSK 1 - 6 app to come out or will that be a long time? I'm most interested in the level 6 vocabulary, but the HSK 1 - 3 level are a helpful review.

I'm so excited to find this! I've been studying without a textbook for over a year because I never found one I was willing to use my very limited budget to purchase.

BECAUSE I'M JUST A BEGINNER, I DON'T HAVE A LOT OF COMMENTS ABOUT THIS, BUT I'VE BEEN USING NCIKU.COM FOR QUIZZING AND I HATED IT BECAUSE EVERYTHING WAS SO SMALL. THIS IS VERY EASY TO READ AND DOESN'T FEEL OVERWHELMING TO LEARN. I THINK YOUR WEBSITE COULD ADVERTISE THIS BETTER BY PLAYING UP THE CLASSICAL APPROACH TO LEARNING A LANGUAGE. NOT FOCUSING ON DIALOGUE AND SPENDING A LOT OF TIME LISTENING TO THE LANGUAGE AND SEEING IT AND LEARNING ABOUT THE CULTURE IS A GREAT WAY TO IMMERSE YOURSELF IN THE LANGUAGE SO THAT YOU ARE MORE CONFIDENT WHEN YOU ARE READY TO SPEAK.

WE ARE ON THE CUSP OF THE WORLD NEEDING TO LEARN CHINESE, AND I LOVE WHAT YOU HAVE TO OFFER IN LEARNING IT! NOT EVERYONE WANTS TO CARRY ON CONVERSATIONS WITH PEOPLE ON THE STREET. THEY WANT TO READ IT AND FEEL A A PART OF THE CHINESE WORLD IN LITERARY WAYS. (SORRY, THAT'S HOW I THINK.) I WOULD MARKET THIS TO LIBERAL ARTS PEOPLE IN COLLEGES AND ELEMENTARY ED AND SECONDARY ED THAT ARE FORWARD ENOUGH TO CARE ABOUT CULTURES AROUND THE WORLD. AND DON'T FORGET HOME SCHOOLERS (WHICH WE ARE). THERE ARE LOTS OF HOME SCHOOL ORGANIZATIONS AND VENDORS THAT WOULD BE INTERESTED IN YOUR PRODUCT. MY FAVORITE IS TJED.ORG.
I'm interested in using this with my home school family on as many as 4 computers with 4 full time students. What can we work out for this?

Hello, my name is Marisol. I am a sophomore at the University of Madison Wisconsin. I am currently studying abroad in Tianjin on a FLAS scholarship through the UW- Madison, and I am in my second year of studying Chinese.

I came across this learning resource (dictionary download 15 day trial) through the syllabus about a week before by Chinese final exam this Spring and this program completely changed the way I study Chinese today. Currently, we are not taught radicals but are simply expected to copy characters mindlessly until we have them memorized. After downloading your free trial- I spent an entire Sunday studying for my Chinese exam by looking up characters and learning what they actually mean, taking them apart and learning why characters are the way they are. This has fascinated me and I no longer spend hours copying, but rather learning the meaning. Since then, I have recommended this software to all of my friends and my perspective of the language has changed.

Recently however, that trial has ended and I am lost. As a student living abroad on my own, every penny counts and I am sad to say I cannot afford the 20 US dollar dictionary download. I hope you can understand, I was simply wondering if there was any way I could get the software for free.

The only thing I can think of with the app is to have the characters in the bank also alphabetically arranged if it is not already done so.

David,

I have been a big fan of Clavis Sinica over the years. This was the first tool I ever found which allowed me to focus on the less common, but still useful, characters. Using your software, I made a lot of progress in my goal of stretching my vocabulary from 3,000 to 5,000 characters (I am not sure where I am now - somewhere in between).

I must confess, though, that after I got my iPhone, I started using other applications. For Chinese writing practice, I use Hokseh. They have thousands of characters, which is important to me. For building my vocabulary, I use an application called FlashCard (I oddly can't find more information about it in the app or on the Apple site right now). The thing I like about this app is that the vocabulary is arrange by the HSK test level. By going to the level 6 vocabulary, I can immediately focus on the characters which I need to learn.

Clavis Sinica is much, much better than these apps in the flexibility to dig into how characters and components of the characters relate to each other. That is so useful in going beyond the rote memorization which the other apps allow. Have you considered adding in the HSK vocabulary? I would think that would be readily accessible to you somewhere.

Best regards,
Peter

Perfect, thanks.

You have wonderful...complex...valuable...and learning-rich process. Clavis Sinica Is much more than a "language website." it is strategically adaptable to
different stages of knowledge, tactically flexible to lesson-elements, and instantly reinforceable.

Dear David,

I would like to thank you for tremendous job you did creating Clavis. This software is a key to learning Chinese in the most efficient way. Within several weeks I managed to learn almost 300 characters and now can read basic texts. Just brilliant.

I have a question for you. Currently, I am using Voices project as my fundamental tool. It helps a lot, however, sometimes I have difficulties understanding meaning of some sentences. I tried Google translate, but it is not of much help. Therefore, I was wondering if you could advise if I can find translation for those texts. That'd really be wonderful.

Once again, Thank you very much for an awesome job you've done!

Hello David

No questions this time, merely a wish list as a User for whatever you are Obviously I would like to see as much of your Clavis Sinica programme as possible incorporated into an App, but I am sure there are limitations. Your entire programme is useful but the features I like most are the dictionary/character/compound look up and the ability to create custom flashcards.
About three years ago I switched from a Windows OS environment, after 25 years, to Mac, and am now a dedicated Applefan. As I believe I mentioned in our brief telephone chat, I am now using my iPad (now the New One!) as much as, if not more than, my desktop and laptop computers, so I am hoping you will be able to put together a version of Clavis Sinica for the 'Pad'. I use your computer programme literally everyday to supplement my tutored lessons in Mandarin.
I have downloaded and tried several Chinese Learning Apps for my iPad and iPhone but none of then are as helpful and comprehensive as your software. I can assure you would have a guaranteed buyer/user for an App and I would be happy to serve as a trial user for any Beta version you might eventually build.
Thank you.
Best regards

Subject: Please add content to the Chinese Character Trainer for iPhone
From: Christopher Bartlett
To: info@clavisinica.com

The Chinese Character Trainer for iPhone is the best way I have found for learning characters. Tied directly to the Stepping Stones reading material, I have 3 ways to learn. Reading in context, flashcards, the actual writing of the characters. Tracing a template 5 times then writing without any template is a terrific way to learn the characters and reading in context builds both fluency and vocabulary. Its great. I just completely ate up the first two lessons. I desperately wish you would continue developing the app to include all of the Stepping Stone lessons. It would also be great if you could put the reading passages into the app too. That way I have everything I need to study in one place wherever I go. Learning on my phone is the absolute best of rme since I carry it everywhere and can learn anytime and place I have a few minutes to spare.
To sum up, 1) please put the rest of the Stepping Stone characters in the Chinese Character Trainer for iPhone, 2) please put the text from the stories into the app, 3) please develop equivalent material for the next 500 characters. If you did, I'm sure the HSK would be a breeze. Remember, having reading material that accompanies the character list is key. The lack of things to read with characters I know is a real hassle to learning. Looking things up, even electronically, breaks ones concentration and diminishes learning if done too often. If you keep your character lists perfectly synchronized to the reading materials, you are providing a service that literally no one else is.
And by the way, yes I would pay for these features. While expensive apps are generally a turn off, I would think you could make all the stepping stone lessons something quite reasonable like $5. Then make 2-4 additional apps that would cover the next 500 characters (perhaps 125 at a time) for $5 each and I think it would sell pretty good for the HSK crowd particularly and just about anyone else too. If it works well for other people to learn, they will naturally want to climb up the ladder chain. I sincerely hope it would be profitable for your business to do so.
-Chris

David,

I love the new app. I have downloaded it onto my iPad. First thought is this is an extremely powerful method to use to increase not only our ability to recognize the character, but the learning process to memorize the character and make it our own. I really look forward to the addition of more characters and will, in the meantime, work daily on the first 300. I did want to make you aware of a seeming glitch on the character "*dzou".* After writing the first line in the character, it does not allow the writing of any other portions of the character. I am working with it on the ipad 2.

One of my greatest compliments on these apps.............I have the ability to increase the size of the characters to make them easy to see and read.

I had sent you this feedback on the latest version of Clavis Sinica. For some of us aging students, the small characters are difficult to read. The ability to increase the size of the characters in this app is very useful.

Thank you for developing these apps and lessons. These are tremendous tools to help the casual and the mores serious student of the Chinese language increase their vocabulary and character knowledge.

Been using Sinica 5.0 since last year and find it very helpful! The vocab manager is a bit too much for me as the number of words to review is overwhelming - it would be good if I could somehow tell the vocab manager to ignore less common words and just focus on top 5000 or so.

I had a look at the new app and it may be good for my kids - I have managed to build my vocab thanks to your software so my need for flashcards is not so great. Once my wife gets her itunes sorted (iphone, imac, ipod) we will download a copy of the app.

Your Clavis 5.0 is great.

Hi David

Thank you for your prompt, helpful and informative replay. Much, much appreciated. I am currently exploring your suggestions but, without delay, wanted to tell you how ecstatic I am with your program Clavis Sinica.

I have spent the last two days immersed in it and have already learned/relearned more than 100 characters. I had exhaustively searched the Internet for electronic programs to assist. Found quite a few, also books and a couple dozen apps for the iPad, but nothing came even close to Clavis Sinica. It shines brighter, much brighter than any of them. You guys have a true winner. I am so thrilled with it, that I'm floating on air.

How can anyone become so excited over learning Chinese? If you knew how I have tried many times in the past to learn Chinese characters, you would appreciate my excitement for your software.

I wrote that I was a beginner, and yes, I definitely am. But my love for the Chinese character goes way back. Initially I studied Korean on my own via books/tapes from the Monterey Army Language School. Reason? My roommate in undergraduate and graduate school was Korean and I had interests in the family. I learned about 200 Chinese characters in addition to hangul; then worked in Seoul for a year. That was in 1964.

Then I studied Japanese for one year in Graduate School studying for my MSEE. (You might ask, "What was an engineer doing studying languages?". Engineers are terrible in the humanities.) That was back in 1967. I learned approx 600 characters then, but that was 44 years ago. I retained very little.

Next I attended FSI (Foreign Service Institute) in Virginia. The Chinese language course was very much abbreviated. Only had ten weeks out of the normal 2 year course (one year in Washington, DC and the second in Taipei). This course was only suppose to make the Foreign Service Officer aware of the language so he would not be at a total loss when transferred to Beijing. Unfortunately the course did not even scratch the surface. Very, very few characters were taught/learned. The stress was for conversation, for use in hotels, restaurants and taxi. It had minimal use.

In 1986 I was transferred to Beijing (and departed one month after the Tian an Men civil unrest in 1989). Unfortunately the US Dept of State had a very strong "non fraternization" policy at that time. Very little mixing with the local population. My excuse for not learning Chinese was that I worked all day with Americans, came home to an American family and by decree, had very, very little contact with the Chinese. That was most unfortunate because now I would jump at the opportunity. How times have changed with Hu Jin Tao's visit.

During my 3 years in Beijing, the Ambassador was Winston Lord. He is my first cousin and also classmate at prep school. I had the esteemed pleasure of meeting his Chinese wife, Bette Bao Lord (from Shanghai). Perhaps you know the name, author of "Spring Moon", "The Middle Heart", etc. She was very popular in China, more than the U.S. Ambassador. Bette Bao said Winston only knew one word in Chinese, the word for ice cream. If that was true, then at least I knew a bit more than he did but not much. That was 22 years ago.

I mention all this because if I had had your program Clavis Sinica, I am sure I would have excelled. I truly love the language and especially the characters. I find using your program so much fun and it really has speed up the learning process. Unfortunately, even in 1989 while in Beijing, computers were virtually non existent. I had an Apple ][. Talk about ancient history.

Thank you and the team for such an outstanding program. I find some short comings in the program, and some inconsistencies, but I'll quarry about these latter, after I have more experience working with Clavis Sinica.

Job well done!

Stu

What is very important, from my perspective, is to have an enhancement to your present software which includes the feature of a simple word processor to enter Chinese characters. Your flashcards and the drilling down of Chinese characters along the association to other Chinese syllables and words is GREAT, it stimulates the curiosity of the user and further learning.

Dear Mr Porter,

I have downloaded the trial version and am completely addicted - it has opened up a whole new world of Chinese literature. Where before I would spend hours looking up characters on a text, its now quick enough that I can maintain my interest in the text and store and learn the new vocabulary. I think the vocabulary list feature is excellent, with the flash cards and the assessment test.

Occasionally there seems to be a problem with the flash cards where a character that wasn't there is the correct answer. I also think that sometimes the definitions of characters are not in enough detail.

Having said that this is an excellent programme, and has made studying Chinese much more efficient and effective, and thereby making it a much more enjoyable and rewarding process. I which I had known about it before.

Just a couple of questions -

1) I started reading Jia by Ba Jin and I want to continue - do you know where I can download the whole text? Or for that any useful sites with Chinese downloads?

2) Do you have any Chinese newspaper recommendations?

3) Facebook is not allowed in China - is there any other way of getting that Chinese Toolbox software?

Many Thanks,

Raphael Boreham

I would like to order the CD as for my level I will use the Flashcards and the text reader. I just downloaded the trial version and it is great.

On the reader with the Chinese texts is there an English translation i.e. literal as opposed to word for word - that would help with understanding.

You asked me about pricing for Ipod. I think what most developers do is initially offer a lite version i.e. free version as a sort of sampler and people can pay for the version with more features if they like it. At least that is what they do with games. This is similar to what you are doing with the free online Chinese tools.

Right now I am after something to drill myself on flashcards - I couldn't find anything at the Apple app store. I don't know what sort of demand there would be for this type of application. I think pricing it similar to the Blackberry app is reasonable. I couldn't get the blackberry app to work but from the screen shot on the web it looked like the graphics were not of the quality I would expect for a Ipod application. The quality and feel should be similar to the web version you offer.

I couldn't view the flashcards over the web on my Ipod at home. I assume there is some conflict with Java and Apple? Or maybe I need to enable some feature?

In summary, the software appears to be a brilliant resource for learning to recognize, read Chinese.

David,

Thank you for your personal email!

Actually --- I already received a replacement disk just the other day via mail (from a Michigan return address, not New York like the original disc envelope). It included a little note from someone (an Asian female, forget her name).

I got a chance to try out the new Clavis disc late last night before bed and IT WORKS WONDERFULLY! It was so great to finally hear the characters pronounced. And the Chinese Toolbox was not empty, it included all four applications. I'm 100% pleased --- and mostly just annoyed I did not write you guys two years ago to get this fixed. Your software will be a great learning tool for daily Bart train rides.

Thanks a lot for the replacement. I hope your software continues to reach new users and become even better.

Hello,

Thank you for the chance to evaluate your program!

So far, I am very satisfied by the interface. I find the program to be
very useful.

I deeply appreciate and like the examples you put on your site. You gave
me something to work for the next 2 years. :) Most importantly, you gave
me the feeling that I can learn Chinese.

I am thinking of buying the electronic version of your program in the
near future. What advantages will I have if I buy, compared to the trial
version? Is there a difference between the electronic version and the cd
version?

Do you have an affiliate program? I could write a nice review about your
program and I'm sure I can convince more people to buy it. When you are
a Chinese, or when you are proficient in Chinese, you might not know
what a beginner is struggle with. I'm a beginner, and I'm full of
questions. Your program answers a lot of them.

I am very encouraged by this new product. It is precisely the type of study material I have been attempti ng to find for years. Now, with this tool box, students can listen to the Chinese language at their own fluency level.

I am sending this e-mail not only to thank you for the Clavis Sinica Chinese Toolbox, but also to ask that you send me the Clavis Sinica 4.0, which as I shared with you at the CLAM conference, was lost when my desktop was stolen last year. Of course, now I create backup files for everything.

Thank you so much for all you are doing to help those who want to become fluent in Chinese.

Thank you for the fast responses, and thank you for creating such a wonderful product!

I started studying Mandarin about 15 years ago; if this tool was available then, my reading and vocab level would be good enough that I probably wouldn't still need to be studying today!

I would like to mention that if Clavis were combined with a pen type translator (the kind that glides over reading material and translates it on to a tiny screen on the pen), it would be an even more attractive product to me (especially if the speed is improved).

BTW, I am also a Wolverine; I graduated from U of M back in 1991 with a PoliSci/Asian Studies + Econ degree and am now living in Shanghai working with startup companies. Given I live here, let me know if I can help a fellow Wolverine.

Hello David and Co,

I found your page via Treehouse website, and have just installed the program on my notebook PC with Vista Business edition, with many thanks to your email reminding me about selecting 'Run as Adminitrator' with 'right mouse click'. I was just about to write saying that an alert keeps saying C: drive inaccessible , when I saw your confirmation email arrive.

Also, I liked the installation format with check list; it advises what will happen next, so not leaving one worried about having to blindly click a button and with anxiety of not being able to stop what happens if you get something unexppected.

I've only just opened a couple of functions regarding the characters and I'm really imprressed. This is what I have wanted for years. I've been using Kinsoft dictionaries, but they are aimed at Chinese speakers, although the software is useful for using Chinese MSWindows.

I'll buy the full version of Clavis Sinica when i return to UK in 3 weeks time. I've been in China 5 weeks now, and come here regularly.

Thanks again for a great program.

Clavis Sinica is a great product. It addresses many of the issues, and frustrations, that I have had over my years of study. Namely, most all other learning strategies assume the Chinese Characters
used in developing dialogues are the key ones.

For the westerner, learning Chinese has to distinct tracks: speaking and reading.

Thank you so much for creating this language tool. My Chinese has been stuck at the same level for the past 10 years because I have not had the right tools to work with in my limited study time. I have tried other software, but it was either too basic or the functionality was not so useful. I even considered writing my own software to study Chinese, because the nature of the language makes computerized study very effective. I have been using this program for a few months now, and finally I am building new vocabulary and getting similar characters differentiated in my mind.

My main suggestion would be to make some standardized vocabulary lists available online. For example, I spent a great deal of time going through your entire dictionary to choose the characters which I do not know. I found that I did not know approximately 80% of the characters which are not identified with an asterisk indicating frequency of use. If you had a vocabulary list of the *** words, ** words, * words and " " words, that would be a great starting place for people at different levels to focus on building vocabulary at their own level.

Even without these lists, your software is by far the greatest Chinese learning tool I've seen, and I am so grateful to you for making available at a reasonable price to the general public.

Dear David,

Thank you for your kind letter informing me about Clavis Sinica version 3.1 new features. Your program is such a magnificent adjunct to studying Chinese because it enables the student to select from a myriad of ways to organize Chinese characters for study. I have found that Clavis Sinica's feature which presents all characters containing a student selected Chinese character radical, for example, helps me greatly to organize my study of the very large and inclusive dictionary that Clavis Sinica contains, so that I can learn all of the characters more quickly and thoroughly since I can configure the presentation of the characters to fit the way that I am best able to learn.

My compliments to you for offering a product of such high quality and relevence for Americans now and in the foreseeable future.

Warmly,
John David Stanley, M.D.

David,

Thank you very much for the quick response. I did go to DLI to learn Chinese (a great program to
give a student a functional baseline in a language, and although they try to give as much cultural background as they can, there is not enough time at the speed they push you through). I am not using my Chinese at the moment, but I
have to test every year. I have been looking around for a computer program to help me maintain
my proficiency. I have used Wenlin, but the price is a little steep. I really liked the look of
your program. It seems to have great functions to help improve my reading, and the price is great.
Surprisingly, the mail usually gets here within 7-8 days. Again, thank you for the shipment!

Dear Clavis Sinica Team,

Your website is really great, the layout beautiful, the contents
on a very high and professional level! I am learning Chinese since
three years in an evening course. To keep track on the characters
I learnt, I downloaded the list of the 300 most frequently used
characters and the one with the 500 next frequently used ones,
and I mark the characters learnt in every lesson in these lists.

My average according to the Chinese Character Test is
approximately 1000 (level: High Intermediate). Most of the 800
characters from the two first lists I have already learnt - could you
please send me the list of the next group of 800 most frequently
used characters as well (the ones with one asterisk)? Then, I can
continue to check if new characters are among the 1600 most
frequently used ones ;-)

Date: 3 Nov 2005

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am a student with a disability in Australia. I don't have web access at home and am not sure how to get the demo version of your software from the computers at school to my computer. I don't come into school very often so this is one of the first times I've actually even realised there are any resources online. I was blown away by your site, particularly the links to Chinese literature and the like, and very surprised to note that you offer for people in financially disadvantaged situations the option of possibly discounted or even free software (of the standard version).

I was just writing because in a sense I can't quite believe it's true. At the moment I don't have any spare money at all... I'm literally trying to avoid my electriciy getting cut off. I was wondering would you consider me a suitable candidate for a free version of the programme? If so, then I will certainly write in as suggested...

I am doing a combined degree (undergraduate), and one of the degrees is International Studies in Chinese Mandarin. Unlike many of the students who mainly have a business interest, I am doing it because I find the language, culture and history of China incredibly interesting. Unfortunately it seems that my medical conditions are a massive barrier to staying in China for the year that is required as part of my degree... I can't seem to find out any helpful information in relation to this but it is discouraging; there might be a delay at the very least and I am going to need to keep practising during this time, which I find very difficult by myself, so the standard version of Clavis Sinica would prove invaluable.

I am not sure if the product requires a net connection to run. I don't have one at the moment and I am not sure if I will be able to afford high speed internet either. However please don't let this disqualify me from consideration, as I have been meaning to get at least dial-up.

Thank you for your time,

Cat Everett

PS A Special Needs officer from uni will most likely to be amenable in terms of willingness to confirm that I do have a disability, if that is of assistance.

Is there any way - and I'm happy to pay - to get the whole script for Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon in Chinese characters? I bought the all-English pricey hardcover from Amazon recently.

By the way, as a fan of your knowledge I would love to become more famiiar with your work. Amazon certainly tells me little @ your "Ideographia". Is that the place to start & was that your dissertation?

FYI, I did 25 credits, ~2-1/2 of Mandarin at Columbia College about 78-81. You can't imagine how nice it is to return to it with such a feeling of easy familiarity with the characters' appearance. It is such a beautiful language and culture! Thanks for making it more accessible.

Still i think your program is much better value and i'm making good use of it in my studies of the chinese language.

One thing i'm trying to do is... use the Insert option..trying to make up my own sentences in chinese characters. How ever when i insert a character it always gets inserted in front of a the last character. In effect making my sentence backwards. Is there a work around for this - or will it be fixed in a future version? Dear Dr. Porter,

My name is W.P. Stacy Branum, and I am a third semester Chinese student at the New School, studying with professor Yong Ho. Per his recommendation, I'd like to purchase your software which, might I say, is getting rave reviews from my classmates. If you email me your address, I'll be happy to send you a check for the program right away.

In the meantime, I also have a question for you: Since I do a fair amount of computing both at the office and at home, will it be possible for me to download the program onto both of my machines?

Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Thanks! By the way, I've been using Clavis Sinica for almost a year and it has really helped improve my reading and vocabulary. Just the discipline of reading the China News Digest summaries for 15-20 minutes a day (alternating between simplified and traditional characters) has taken my Chinese to the next level. Thanks for making this available.

Thanks for your help. I downloaded the software again, and it worked. However, even though I had Java 1.4.1 I had to upgrade to system 10.3 to get it to work.

This is great software! I can finally practice reading without being tethered to my dictionary.

I received my copy of Clavis Sinica already, and after looking at it must say that it is as good as I hoped: a very useful piece of software at a very affordable price. I must go through a technology committee to get the software purchase approved, but will start the process today.

Dear David,

Your product is a boon to those like myself who are staring up at the huge learning curve of Mandarin. I have a masters in Japanese and can tell you that nothing like this was available for that language on either Wintel or PPC until just recently, and these are nowhere near as elegantly integrated and completely thought-out as Clavis (nor are they ported to Macs). The only product I've ever seen to hold a candle to Clavis is Dokusha, the wonderful Japanese text reader for Palm OS.

For those who are curious about using Clavis on a Mac, I stubbornly refuse to buy Panther as I feel it is a Gatesian upgrade.....i.e., too expensive and primarily fluff. I therefore tried to run Clavis within VirtualPC on my 900MHz G-3 iBook. Not good. Clearly, asking a G-3 with 640 MB of RAM handle a complex Java application within an already emulated version of Windows is just too much.....it works, but with a huge lagtime after every command. Maybe a G-4 or G-5 would improve upon this but I have no way of knowing. The Good News is that Clavis works just fine in Jaguar :-) I had already installed the latest JRE update so I expected trouble as per the advisory on the website. But I am happy to report that it is functioning quite happily with my 10.2.6 version of OS X. Just give it a moment to first load, then enjoy.

Hello,

I am very impressed with what your product offers at 1/4 the price of Wenlin. I would like to purchase it to use within VirtualPC (Windows 2000) on a 900MHz Apple iBook. If the performance should prove unsatisfactory when running Clavis within emulated Windows, would there be anything preventing me from copying the program to my desktop PC and running it natively within Windows 2000 Server? I don't wish to purchase the "Panther" upgrade for Mac OS X.

Hello,

I just bought a copy of Clavis Sinica for Mac OSX and am very pleased with how it works. As I learn more I do have one question that I don't see answered anywhere in documentation: Is it possible to increase the font size of a pasted in character in the Text Window? I prefer a slightly larger size for the traditional characters.

Although CS seems sluggish on my Pismo (one more good reason to get a new powerbook!) I find it works just great on my desktop machine (DP 800).

Thank you very much for an intelligent and so-useful program for this new Chinese language student.

David-

hi again.

I'd just like to say that the further I get in my Chinese studies, the more
I am appreciating your program.

At the moment, I'm using a GB5 file of Sun Zi Art of war together with an
English translation, both of which I found on the net.

It's great to be able to print out selections, and I am selecting one
chapter a time to print out.

Is there any way to be able to print out a selection like that converted to
pinyin? That way, when I am not at my computer, I could compare the printed out
chapter in character and in pinyin. If I could do that, I could help myself
'read out' the chapter, and I am sure it would help me learn the characters
much quicker.

Is it at all possible? I haven't found any options or menus.

Regards.

I have also recommended the software to my weekly mandarin conversation group.
I have a quick question. I noticed that the new version set up a completely new
set of folders, and as a result, none of my previous dictionary entries are
available. (I added quite a few). Would it be possible to copy the dictionary file(s)
from the version 3.0 folders to the 3.1 folders? If so, which files should I copy?
Thanks!

Hello,
I just wanted to thank you for writing such a wonderful program. I've found
it immensely useful so far. I especially like how easy it is to copy and
paste text from the internet directly into the reader. I also like the audio
and the ability to convert between traditional and simplified.

The ability to add characters and compounds to the built in dictionary is
very useful. I was wondering, however, is there a way to correct or add to
an entry once I've entered it?

I realize it would be a lot of work, but I for one would be very interested
in a palm version of this program if you should ever decide to develop one.
I download the Palm365 news through Mobipocket and this reader would be
great for helping to read that.

Thanks a lot for all your hard work in developing this work. I've
recommended it to my friends. I especially appreciate that you've kept the
price affordable.

By the way, do you know where I can get the full script for "Crouching
Tiger, Hidden Dragon"?

Keep up the great work! Great program!

Thanks,

Dear David,

I decided to stay up late, and have a better look at Clavis Sinica. I am
very impressed, and definitely will use the program. I read through your
help file (downloaded from your website yesterday) and played with the
different functions available on the demo version, using the file reading.gb.

My favorite things of all are the basic features: click to see the pinyin
(yea!) and English translation, double click to bring up the dictionary
details, and right click for additional functions. Just being able to
quickly see the pinyin is a real help to me, even for those words not
defined in your dictionary (such as tiao2pi2=naughty, and
chui1niu2=boast) I see from your help file that the full version will
allow me to add these compounds to the dictionary, and new characters (such
as huo3 in the same file) as well.

This is a real complete package, and includes nearly everything that I use
my many dictionaries for now. The only thing missing is a stroke order
list, and since this is a reading program, rather than a writing program, I
don't expect that. [...]

By the way, I will definitely make sure that I add your link to my
website. I am very impressed with your program, and I have used or
evaluated a number of Chinese learning programs. Tomorrow I have to go
into Tucson for Chinese school, but will try to get the link added first
thing on Monday morning. (I need to revamp and update that webpage a lot
anyway, since I expect that many of the links there are outdated.)

Let me know if I can help you any further. It's after 11 pm now, and the
coyotes are carrying on loudly outside, so I think I'll call it a night and
consider any additional thoughts or ideas I have about Clavis Sinica in the
morning.
